On October 16-17, 2023, Prof. Chettiyappan Visvanathan and Dr. Suwanna K. Boontanan from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering attended the inaugural regional workshop on the Promotion of Action Against Marine Plastic Litter in Asia and provided updates on the activities of the current Counter Measure II extension project. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Mahidol University is the primary partner in Thailand for this extension project. This initiative, launched by UNEP with the support of the Government of Japan, aims to enhance scientific knowledge to identify the sources and pathways of plastic pollution in river systems in Asia, particularly in the Mekong and Ganges rivers, along with specific areas in Sri Lanka. It also seeks to promote policies and engage citizens in addressing plastic litter. The current extension of the Counter Measure project focuses on building national-level capacity for plastic-free rivers in Cambodia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. The workshop was hosted at the Sukosol Hotel in Bangkok.
