On June 4, 2025, the Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, headed by the Mahidol Engineering Zero Waste Living Lab team, visited the Chula Zero Waste Project at Chulalongkorn University. The delegation was headed by Assistant Professor Dr. Korporn Panyim, Deputy Dean for Administration and Finance; Associate Professor Dr.Trakarn Prapaspongsa; and Dr. Sri Shalini Sathyanarayanan, an expert in waste management and circular economy from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. They were joined by faculty members, staff, and students. The Chula Zero Waste initiative is recognized as one of Thailand's leading models for sustainability in higher education institutions.
The visit included a presentation by Khun Korb Limsuwan, Project Manager of Chula Zero Waste, who shared insights into the university's sustainability strategy and waste management framework. Participants had the opportunity to engage in an open discussion about the project's challenges and real-world impacts. The group toured key waste management areas, including:
1.The university cafeteria area, showcasing waste reduction and separation at the source.
2.The biomass processing facility, where a bio-digester transforms food scraps-mainly vegetable and fruit waste-into energy.
3.The waste compaction area, demonstrating how sorted waste is processed, separating energy-convertible waste from general waste for proper disposal.
Mahidol University has recognized the importance of comprehensive solid waste management on campus and is committed to becoming a Zero Waste University. The institution aims to minimize waste generation and maximize reuse through the 3Rs principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Education and awareness-raising on proper waste management are central to this mission.
The Faculty of Engineering is actively advancing clear and actionable policies and plans for waste management across the full cycle-from source to disposal. It seeks to build environmental awareness among its students and staff, encouraging real behavioral change. Even small changes in daily habits can lead to a significant positive impact on the planet.
In recognition of World Environment Day on June 5, Mahidol Engineering encourages everyone to take meaningful action for the environment-and stay tuned for upcoming green initiatives and events from the Mahidol Engineering Zero Waste Living Lab.
